If you are under 18, you will need a work permit. Typically, after an employer agrees to hire a minor, the minor obtains from his or her school a Department of Education form titled "Statement of Intent to Employ Minor and Request for Work Permit." After returning the completed and signed form to the school, school officials may issue the permit to the minor to be employed to work.

Interns will work on various projects from our divisions that will teach you about the operations of the Assessor-Recorder’s office. Below are some of the projects that interns worked on during the ASR Summer Internship Program:

  • Public Service & Exemptions: Data Clean Up Support Project
    • Interns job shadowed Public Service staff from start to finish and learned how to research mailing address records using the USPS lookup tool to clean up the weekly mailing address cleanup file from IT. ASR staff showed the interns how use this tool to correct the errors in the IT clean up file. Working side by side with the ASR staff the interns were able to see the outcome of their work from start to finish.
    • To support the next project in the Transaction’s & Recorder department, cohorts learned how to search and produce official records using DigitalReel and Records Manager.
  • Transactions & Recorder: Document Research Project
    • Cohorts researched documents for parcels on the SMART data cleanup list for 2 weeks. This involved pulling recorded documents from DigitalReel for parcels identified with a retire date earlier than the effective date. Interns had to determine which was the correct date based on the recorded change of ownership records and make the corrections in the AS400 records management system after they were reviewed by the Transaction unit staff.
    • Cohorts also job shadowed the recorder staff and learned about recorder operations.
  • Standards & Mapping: Property Characteristics Research Project
    • Cohorts utilizing the skills learned from the projects 1 & 2 above and conducted property characteristics research and assisted ASR staff to update the property records prior to their migration to the new SMART records management system.
  • Business Personal Property: Business Classification Data Project
    • Interns helped the Business & Personal Property (BPP) staff review approximately 5000 properties to determine each business for classification, such as restaurant, salon, etc. This project introduced the cohorts to our latest SMART records system upgrade that is currently in use by the Business Personal Property and the Exemptions departments. All other ASR departments are scheduled to transition to the SMART records management system in 2024.
  • Budget, Finance, Contracts: Research public metrics
    • Interns researched data and performance measures that other Assessors’ offices from the state of California and large cities within the United States are sharing on their public websites such as annual reports, county tax services and public property tax information they share in the public domain.
    • Interns input the information from their research into an excel spreadsheet and compared & contrasted the information against the San Francisco Assessor-Recorder’s website with ASR staff to make recommendations to improve the San Francisco City & County website with similar information for the public.
