ASSESSOR CARMEN CHU LED RESOLUTION TO COMMEMORATE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOMEN’S VOTE

2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, extending the right to vote to women. However, equal voting rights were not granted for all women, the ongoing fight to vote continues today. On Tuesday, August 25, 2020, with the support of W Challenge, Supervisors Stefani, Ronen and Fewer introduced a resolution at the Board of Supervisors meeting to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment in honor of Women’s Equality Day (Wednesday, August 26, 2020). Assessor Carmen Chu, the co-founder of W Challenge, spoke about the history of women fighting for the right to vote and background of the resolution.

See the Resolution here.

The W Challenge was launched in 2018 on Women’s Equality Day. It is a collaboration led by the San Francisco Assessor Carmen Chu, San Francisco Department on the Status of Women and the League of Women Voters San Francisco with a simple goal of raising women’s voices and expanding women’s representation. Each year we design a new challenge to encourage women to act. Women’s Equality Day was first established in 1973 to commemorate the 1920 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Learn more here at wchallenge.org
