Last Day to File Business Personal Property on June 1, 2020
*** PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT***
LAST DAY TO FILE BUSINESS PERSONAL PROPERTY ON JUNE 1ST
Businesses can submit their statements online, by mail or drop off at City Hall
SAN FRANCISCO, CA --- Earlier this month, the Office of Assessor-Recorder extended the deadline for businesses to file their annual personal property statements to June 1, 2020 to avoid tax penalties. The State subsequently took similar action to extend the action statewide. Under COVID-19, local businesses are strongly encouraged to file electronically through our website. However, statements filed by email, mail (postmarked), fax, or in-person through a drop-off at City Hall scheduled on June 1 (before 5pm) will be accepted without penalty.
Under the State law, items like furniture, machinery, equipment and supplies used to run a business are subject to property taxation. They are called Business Personal Property (BPP). All businesses in California are required to file their BPP with their County Assessor by May 7 every year, otherwise, a 10% penalty will be automatically applied according to California Revenue and Taxation Code (section 441(b) and 463). However, this year, the filing deadline was extended to June 1.
In addition, the state approved our Office’s request to accept electronically filed BPP statements and attachments by email and other methods, including fax. Previously filings were limited to mailed statements/attachments and those filing directly through our online portal. Businesses may now also email or fax their BPP statements to us. Note, all materials must be filled out completely including authorized signature by the owner or authorized agent. Also note, these filings must also include a cover sheet identifying the company and include contact information of the sender.
In-person drop off will also be made available on June 1, 2020, between 8am to 5pm at San Francisco City Hall. A secured drop box will be located on Grove Street between Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place (Polk) and Van Ness Avenue.
